Funerals
Perhaps one of the most difficult experiences people have to face is the death of a member of the family or a very close friend. Arranging a funeral service, as well as trying to cope with that sense of loss can prove very hard. As a community we are here to help and assist, to support and encourage people through this time. St Mary’s is a church for everyone in the community – and many families find great solace in holding a service here. The clergy are able to discuss with you the framework and content of the funeral service – a time for reflection and for thanksgiving, as well as one where we ask God’s help, strength and mercy. For Christians, the death of someone is about life changed, not ended. Because Jesus Christ died, was buried and rose again, we believe that although our earthly body lies in death, we share an everlasting home in heaven.
God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3.16)
In addition we are on hand to assist with practical considerations. Burials take place at Abergavenny Cemetery. However, St Mary’s has a Garden of Rest where cremated remains may be interred. There is a Book of Remembrance in which names of departed loves ones can be inscribed.
Increasingly, families opt for the use of the St Mary’s Priory Centre as venue for funeral lunches and teas.
