Reading with God
Reading with God – David Foster OSB
A practical handbook for beginners to introduce them to the practice of Lectio Divina. David Foster is a Benedictine Monk of Downside Abbey and chaplain to Downside School. He has always been concerned to bring the riches of the monastic tradition to lay people as they struggle to live the Christian life in the modern world. Lectio Divina or the art of spiritual reading is an art which is all but lost outside monastic communities. But following St Benedict's opening command in his Rule to 'listen', attending to the word of God through the printed text is an art which needs to be rediscovered in a world in which we are surrounded by a cacophony of sound and noise. David Foster has written a masterly guide to this art.
Too Deep for Words
Too Deep for Words: Rediscovering Lectio Divina
In this little book we are invited into Lectio Divina from a mystical point of view, seeing the relationship between God in the Word and God in Us as precisely what is illuminated by prayerful reading of Scripture. What makes this book unique, though, is the second half of the book consisting of 500 thematically arranged short passages from the bible, all fruitful starting points for lectio.
Finding Sanctuary
Finding Sanctuary: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life
Following the success of the TV series, 'The Monastery', Abbot Christopher here offers ways in which the lessons of monastic living, and the teachings of St Benedict can be put into practice in our hectic, modern lives. He speaks especially to those who are not sure what they believe but are looking for ways to find spiritual space and peace in the busy, and often confusing, modern world. “Lucidly and lovingly written... designed for anybody who wants to create a quiet area in their life” (Easy Living)
Living with Contradiction
Living with Contradiction: Benedictine Wisdom for Everyday Living
These simple, inviting reflections on the Rule of St Benedict take as their starting point the tensions and uncertainties that we can experience in our personal lives and in the world at large. From its ancient wisdom, we can discover how these ambiguities can become the doors that lead us to a place of healing. “'If you don't have this book, get it - it is full of wisdom and depth.”(Nirvard Kinsella, Prior of Rosecrea Abbey)
Silence and Honey Cakes
Silence and Honey Cakes: The Wisdom of the Desert
This acclaimed book from Rowan Williams looks at the stories of the desert fathers and mothers - a group of Christian monks and nuns living in the Egyptian desert in the 3rd to 5th centuries - concentrating on the wisdom, insights and spirituality found in their writings. In reflecting on the legacy of these extraordinary people and looking at how they lived their lives intimately with God, Rowan Williams contemplates how their spirituality resonates with and can inspire today's spiritual search to reach a unity with God and our fellow neighbours. Williams looks at various topics where the spiritual search of the desert fathers and mothers touches our own, including: living in relationship with others; discovering the truth about ourselves; reassessing our priorities; silence and the importance of language; living in a fearless community; living within our limitations; life and death; and staying and leaving.
